You know that quote that says “life begins at the end of your comfort zone”?  So cliche, but so true.  Another one of my favorite quotes is “Don’t talk about it.  Be about it”.  And I’ll admit sometimes I say this one with sarcasm, but the truth is…this one has big meaning for me.  You see, I’m a goal digger.  My dreams are big and hairy and audacious.  The bigger the better!  But, sometimes fear gets in the way.  And by sometimes, I mean a lot.

It’s really hard to admit that I’m fearful.  We grow up making fun of the “scaredy cat” and our friends who won’t go through with the dare we’ve given them.  We are supposed to laugh in the face of fear, and go forth and “just do it”.  But just doing “it”, depending on the “it”, can be really scary.

Webster defines fear as “an unpleasant or strong emotion caused by anticipation or awareness of danger”.  Sure, I completely understand the “awareness of danger”.  Like why I got scared when I ran into the black bear on my early morning run.  Or, when I narrowly avoided an accident.  But that’s not the fear that I feel most often.  The anticipation of danger is what I most often feel.  Stuff that hasn’t, and probably won’t, even happen!

Does anyone else out there know what I’m talking about?  I call them the “what ifs”.  What if they think I’m crazy?  What if I’m wrong?  What if I fail?  What if I don’t do it perfectly?  What if this isn’t the right color?  What if I said the wrong thing?  What if I get fired?  What if I don’t win?  What if this isn’t the ripest avocado?!  Okay, maybe that last one was a stretch, but I bet y’all know what I’m talking about.

This way of thinking can really put a damper on achieving my goals.  Hell, this mentality can keep me from even taking the first step in the direction of my goals! And not even that, but just living a happy and serene life.

So “what if”, we flip the script and use this potentially Debbie Downer mentality into some positive vibes?!  What if…instead of anticipating danger, we anticipate greatness?  What if everyone thinks you’re brave, not crazy?  What if you’re right?  What if you succeed?  What if it WAS the ripest avocado?!

By simply opening up my mind to the possibility of greatness rather than danger, I’ve opened up a whole new world of opportunity.  Now I feel excited, and motivated, and inspired.  And why the hell not?  Why not look on the bright side?  Why not take a chance?  Why not trust that the Universe has my back?

“There is freedom waiting for you,

On the breezes of the sky,

And you ask "What if I fall?"

Oh but my darling,

What if you fly?”
